Commissioning & Mission-Critical Engineering Insights

Practical introductory articles on test strategy, system integration and resilience.

Commissioning Levels L1–L5: a practical overview

Commissioning levels establish an evidence-based progression from installation verification to integrated testing. The scope of each level is project-specific, but a common approach is to check installed equipment, verify pre-functional readiness, demonstrate equipment-level functionality, perform system-level tests and then validate integrated operation.

The most important management task is ensuring prerequisites, permits, calibrated instruments, approved scripts and acceptance criteria are in place before testing begins.

Black Building Testing: preparing for a controlled power-loss scenario

A Black Building Test is not simply switching off a supply. It requires a defined test boundary, approved method statement, safety assessment, rollback plan, communications protocol and clear acceptance criteria.

Depending on the facility design, observations may include UPS ride-through, generator start and load acceptance, automatic transfer, cooling continuity, alarms, EPMS/BMS records and controlled restoration. The actual procedure must be authorised for the specific installation.

Integrated Systems Testing: testing interfaces, not just equipment

Individual systems can pass their functional tests while integrated operation still contains hidden weaknesses. IST verifies agreed cross-system responses under normal, abnormal and failure scenarios.

Effective IST planning links the cause-and-effect matrix, design intent, monitoring evidence, responsibilities and sign-off requirements into a traceable test programme.
